Backcountry ski trips Part 1: "Winter Forest"

In February the backcountry ski trips that are part of my study program got into swing.
The first was for 3 days, 2 nights in the hilly forest close to Bo. I was in a group with Norwegian and Danish students who are doing a Nordic friluftsliv program where they do trips in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. They were awesome and so were the leaders, two students in the 2nd year of the 3-year friluftsliv program in Bo.

Some exciting things were:
-hanging out with Kristin, who was at Augustana last year!!
-how you can stand on top of the snow and go anywhere you want on backcountry skis
-trying to avoid the surface water on the lakes (there is water under the snow but over the ice!!)
-skiing/walking/sliding down a long steep forested CLIFF to reach our destination
-we had to make two tree bridges over stream crossings
-Practicing lots of Norwegian and Danish language
-I sawed down a huge dead tree, carried it while skiing, and then we burnt the whole thing as firewood. Norwegians love big fires and chopping down wood. Breakfast fires, lunch fires, dinner fires...
-games around the evening fire
-skiing up a hill/mountain to see the sunrise from the top (the Norwegian broke into song with their national anthem)

The weather was very sunny but still a bit chilly. Here are some pictures!

Kristin and I fell maybe 5 times in a row while helping each other up...

"Foot bags" are useful and common gear... but I prefer changing out of my ski boots
sleeping under the stars... at -24
A Norwegian fireside game... ;)
